Jeffrey Bewley - Common Breeds of Dairy Cattle

Jeffrey Bewley has worked in the field of dairy science his entire career, starting with growing up on his grandfather's farm, the Skees and Flowers Dairy. 


Upon earning his Master's degree in Dairy Science from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and his Ph.D. in Animal Sciences from Purdue University in 2008, Dr. Jeffrey Bewley taught at the University of Kentucky until 2017.

Dairy cows are bred for their ability to produce milk and in the United States, the following are the most common dairy cattle breeds.

  • Holstein: The most common dairy cow breed, known for their black and white spots
  • Jersey: The smallest breed of dairy cattle, ranges in color from light to dark brown
  • Brown Swiss: The oldest of the dairy cow breeds, these cows vary in color from silver to dark brown and have large ears




Jeffrey Bewley - A Life-Long Academic in Dairy Sciences

Over the course of his academic tenure at the University of Kentucky, Jeffrey Bewley won numerous awards, secured more than $7.5 million in research funding, and was published in countless peer-reviewed publications and industry magazines.



As a long-time member of the University of Kentucky Animal Sciences faculty, Dr. Jeffrey Bewley has been published in more than forty peer-reviewed academic publications, almost fifty industry magazine publications, and more than one-hundred meeting abstracts.

To date, Jeffrey Bewley has delivered more than eighty presentations on a variety of dairy-related subjects, including compost bedded pack barns, precision dairy technologies, dairy analytics, and dairy technologies.


Dr. Jeffrey Bewley earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Kentucky in 1998, before earning his Master’s degree in Dairy Science at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, he earned his PhD in Animal Sciences at Purdue University. 







Jeffrey Bewley - Graduate Research Assistant Work

Jeffrey Bewley enjoyed the opportunity to receive his graduate-level education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. 


During his UW student tenure, Bewley also worked as a graduate research assistant. Bewley would go on to complete work toward his PhD at Purdue University, where he also worked as a graduate research assistant (2005-2008). 


Following the receipt of his PhD, Bewley earned the opportunity to teach at the University of Kentucky.




Jeffrey Bewley - Nearly 30 Years of Industry Experience

Jeffrey Bewley continues to enjoy a successful and rewarding career in the field of dairy science. A noted expert on anything from precision dairy technology and mastitis management and prevention to dairy records management, freestall barn construction, animal health economics and more, Jeffrey Bewley has made and continues to make a positive impact on the dairy cattle industry.


Jeffrey Bewley obtained his first real exposure to and experience with dairy cattle as a record keeper on his grandfather’s dairy farm – work that spanned over 10 years. It was this work that not only instilled an appreciation of dairy cattle management in Bewley, but that paved the way for success in both the public and private sectors – experience that includes:

  • Work as Interim Herd Manager at the Middleburg, South Africa Driefontein Melkery (1998).
  • Research at both the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1998-2000) and Purdue University (2005-2008).
  • Work as Dairy Technical Services Manager at PerforMix Nutrition Systems (2003-2004).
  • A nine-year tenure as extension professor in the in the department of animal and food sciences at the University of Kentucky (2007-2017).

Former UK Professor Dr. Jeffrey Bewley was a member of the UK Animal and Food Sciences faculty for more than nine years.  He was hired in 2007 as an extension professor in the department of animal and food science, with expertise in dairy science.

An active member of the National Mastitis Council and the American Dairy Science Association, Bewley now serves as Dairy Housing and Analytics Specialist with Alltech.

Jeffrey Bewley - Dairy Science Contributions

Jeffrey Bewley taught at the University of Kentucky Department of Animal and Food Sciences between 2008 and 2017. 


During that time, Bewley enjoyed the opportunity to join and make contributions to a number of dairy science-related associations – including the National Mastitis Council, the American Dairy Science Association, the Holstein Association Young Dairy Leaders Institute and the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists. 

Jeffrey Bewley currently works for Alltech as a Dairy Housing and Analytics Specialist.
