CowFocused Housing Resources
Dr. Jeffrey Bewley and his team are grateful for the opportunity
to share their extensive dairy housing experience and expertise with operations
throughout the dairy community.
Among the housing resources currently available
through CowFocused Housing include:
Compost-bedded pack barns—dairy housing systems
generally comprised of large, wide-open resting areas.
Freestall barns—facilities that are fully
covered with steel roofing and which provide individual stalls where the
animals can lie down.
Tie-stall barns—designs that provide each cow her own stall with immediate access to food and water.
Jeffrey Bewley has an M.S. in Dairy Science from UW-Madison, and
a PhD in Animal Sciences from Purdue University.

Jeffrey Bewley continues to enjoy a successful and rewarding career in the field of dairy science. A noted expert on anything from precision dairy technology and mastitis management and prevention to dairy records management, freestall barn construction, animal health economics and more, Jeffrey Bewley has made and continues to make a positive impact on the dairy cattle industry.
Jeffrey Bewley obtained his first real exposure to and experience with dairy cattle as a record keeper on his grandfather’s dairy farm – work that spanned over 10 years. It was this work that not only instilled an appreciation of dairy cattle management in Bewley, but that paved the way for success in both the public and private sectors – experience that includes:
Work as Interim Herd Manager at the Middleburg, South Africa Driefontein Melkery (1998).
Research at both the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1998-2000) and Purdue University (2005-2008).
Work as Dairy Technical Services Manager at PerforMix Nutrition Systems (2003-2004).
A nine-year tenure as extension professor in the in the department of animal and food sciences at the University of Kentucky (2007-2017).
As support manager for BoviSync in Wisconsin, Jeffrey Bewley identifies customer needs for the cattle management software company. Coming from an academic background, Jeffrey Bewley brings to the table expert knowledge of precision dairy farming.
This new development refers to the practice of quantifying important measures of health and productivity on a per-animal basis. The sheer amount of innovative technology can make it difficult for farmers to know where to begin.
Perhaps the most obvious place to start is milk production. Software can record how much milk each cow gives, enabling farmers to fine-tune the amount of feed each one receives. This makes for cost savings and increased yields.
Offering another enhancement is heat detection software, which permits growers to find the optimal time for breeding and hence the best periods of lactation.
A major concern for growers is mastitis, a common disease that affects milk production and profitability. Precision dairy farming technology enables the early detection of telltale somatic cells in the milk, letting farmers treat the problem even sooner than before.
The future should bring further improvements. Generalized systems such as DeLaval’s Herd Navigator will identify which cows need special attention.
